Peformance when using User Controls (ascx) in ASP.NET Webforms

In my asp.net webforms application I'm using several .ascx user controls. I'm loading these in the code behind on the OnLoad method of the page. I tried loading them in response to a button click, but controls weren't be recognized as being created yet. So I read that the user controls should be loaded on the Page Load or OnLoad events. I'm worried about performance though. It doesn't seem obviously slow yet but I'm worried that once more people are using the application that it could get slow. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on how or what to do about this issue?
